BlackWhiteKey -- 09/07/2007, 15:27:16 -- #36855
so what are thoughts on who's music sounds better? i'm not trying to make this into a competition, because music is an art, not a sport, but i just want to hear some opions on these two miles davis origin pianists. i love both of them, but i enjoy listening to chick more because of his creativeness with latin jazz, and such.

opinions anyone?

jazz jasper -- 09/07/2007, 15:43:59 -- #36855
Chick Corea any day, amazing piano player, WAY better than herbie hancock (no offence to hancock!)

Whacky -- 09/07/2007, 16:17:08 -- #36855
not this again....

MoJazz -- 09/07/2007, 16:20:57 -- #36855
yea,I hear you Doc, not this again...

Both players are great - it's apples and oranges.

mynameis -- 09/07/2007, 17:05:05 -- #36855
None of them. David benoit is the best!

Jazz+ -- 09/07/2007, 18:33:11 -- #36855
I vote Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea is hard to listen to.

Bud -- 09/07/2007, 18:39:35 -- #36855
I vote Chick Corea. Try to emulate that tone...

jmkarns -- 09/07/2007, 19:39:44 -- #36855
They are both major dudes.  But it is two against the world of jazz.

superjames -- 09/07/2007, 19:57:02 -- #36855
I vote herbie, much more tasteful

CynBad -- 09/07/2007, 19:59:11 -- #36855
It's like Deja Vu all over again!

<sigh> Put me down for Chick Corea <sigh> AGAIN

CynBad -- 09/07/2007, 20:00:53 -- #36855
BTW, I just heard a new Antonio Sanchez recording on the radio, featuring Chick Corea on piano.  The tune was "One for Antonio".  I really liked it.

jmkarns -- 09/07/2007, 20:23:32 -- #36855
Antonio -
"At age 5, he had an irrestible attraction to the drumset."
For me it was the harmonica.  Go figure.

jazzvirtuoso -- 09/08/2007, 00:50:58 -- #36855
CHICK is THE man.

Mike -- 09/08/2007, 19:16:02 -- #36855
well if u are going to compare those two u have to throw jarett in the mix who is also a Milse aluni.  But my fav of coure will always be mr Roberts who turned down the offer fom Miles.

Jazz+ -- 09/08/2007, 21:58:16 -- #36855
Yeah, but who would win in the boxing ring? Corea or Hancock?

flapjack -- 09/08/2007, 22:27:45 -- #36855
Hancock has a longer reach and better cardio for boxing but if it was UFC style I would have to go with Chick.  Chick has a lower center of gravity and if he took it to the ground I think he could use a short burst of ferocity to end it in the first round.

Just my opinion.  Oh yeah, I hear that they both play pretty good piano.

Jazz+ -- 09/09/2007, 00:58:09 -- #36855
Corea is 66 years old, Hancock is 14 moths older at 67. Corea has put on a lot of weight and looks like he is really out of shape. Hancock looks quite lean in comparison and looks like a man that probably exercises. My money would go on a Hancock win by the 4th round, Corea would probably become exhausted much sooner.

CynBad -- 09/09/2007, 01:09:35 -- #36855
I'm sure that Scientology will give Chick the edge in any boxing match.

jazz jasper -- 09/09/2007, 03:22:15 -- #36855
He's not a scientologist?!?!!!

PomPom -- 09/09/2007, 03:57:08 -- #36855
yes he is !

charlp88 -- 09/09/2007, 06:06:44 -- #36855
Bill remains KING

Whacky -- 09/09/2007, 08:32:55 -- #36855
I've always wondered which one could eat the most pizza in an hour.  I know they both play great, but heck so do lots of other folks.  I've often fashioned myself quite a pizza eater and I really wonder how I rate compared to these legends.

hepcatmonk -- 09/09/2007, 11:20:48 -- #36855
I hate these discussions. Both these players are very dear to my heart. But I like Herbie Hancock better, if just slightly.

Jazz+ -- 09/09/2007, 11:56:36 -- #36855
Well Herbie's a Buddhist and they know more martial arts than nutty Scientologists. I think it would be little contest, I'll give you 4 to 1 odds on Herbie in the ring.

CynBad -- 09/09/2007, 12:23:23 -- #36855
Jazz+ has a point.

flapjack -- 09/09/2007, 13:02:27 -- #36855
If we are just talking about traditional boxing then its got to be Herbie, but I heard it was going to be in the octagon with UFC rules and that is Chic's style of fighting.  Chick Corea is a kind and generous soul but when he steps into the octagon he is absolutely ruthless.  He will shoot for the double leg, take him down to get mount and then unload a barrage of elbows for a quick ref stoppage or he might (often does) just submit his opponent with an arm-bar.

I am really looking forward to this fight.  Does anybody know if it's going to be on Pay-Per-View?

Jazz+ -- 09/09/2007, 14:38:14 -- #36855
I'm telling you Corea is so overweight and out of shape there would be no contest.

Remember Herbie has fists of steel and he has given us many clues about how lethal his hand can be in his album titles such as "Mr. Hand", "Thrust", "Headhunter" "Deathwish" "Tempest in the Colosseum" "Monster" "Rough" "Blow Up" "Bomb" "Hornets" "Riot" "Rockit"

Then there's Chick Corea who tips his hand with all these nick names that describe his wimpy fighting ablilities: "Light As A Feather" "Humpty Dumpty" "The Leprechaun" "Senor Mouse"  "Eternal Child" "What Game Shall We Play Today" "Friends" "I'm Your Pal" ... sort of reminds me of part of a script from Mr Rodgers Neighborhood.

I think that the Hancock Corea matchup will be an exciting one indeed.

I feel we should test both players for performance enhancing synths before and after the match. The fight should be clean with no shots below middle C.  Herbies clef hook will be stronger than Corea's minor blows and would probably leave him a little blue, however Corea's fast paced style might send Hancock on a maiden voyage to the mat.

However Herbie's Chicago upbringing will give him an edge over Corea's childhood. If Chick still had the moustache maybe it would have been different. A man with one of these is tougher!!

I prefer how Herbie interacts with audiences and feel he is warmer, but I think that Corea's extra years on the acoustic give him more feeling.

After al that I'm sitting on the fence, besides  I could eat more pizza then both of them put together!

jmkarns -- 09/09/2007, 19:27:54 -- #36855
Chick did Mozart so that could carry the day in my opinion.

Mike -- 09/09/2007, 23:04:37 -- #36855
Keith Jarrett would win because he grunts louder.

Jazz+ -- 09/10/2007, 15:46:58 -- #36855
Jarrett would be whining to the referee about spectators taking photos, meanwhile Hancock would be mopping the floor with him.
