LearnJazzPiano.com archives: Greg Symsen passed away

Dear all,

My dear husband Greg Symsen died last night.  I am sure that you are all very saddened to hear the news of the death of this great player.  Greg actually spent much of his time on here and was always telling me how he passed this website to all of his students at the academy.  I am writing to ask all those who knew Greg personally to let me know so that I can invite you to his funeral.  Greg was always telling me how well known he was in the jazz world.  I am also trying to contact one of his friends, Kenny Barron, according to Greg they were very good friends so if any one can pass on this information i'd be very grateful.

Unfortunately I cannot invite all those who listened to his music so to all his fans (and I know there are many many of you on this site) - I apologise.

If you could get in touch with details on those who were friends with Greg, please do, and any help in tracking down Mr Barron, I'd be very grateful.

Many Thanks

Mrs A Symsen

Mrs Symsen,

I am saddened by your loss, and let me offer my condolences.

When doing a Google search for "Greg Symsen", I was surprised to find no references whatsoever to him although you say "how well known he was in the jazz world".

Could you give us some references to his work(s) so that we may get to know him a little better?

Especially since he was so fond of this site.

What was his LearnJazzPiano screen name?

Thank you ...

Mrs. Symsem

I would like to extend my deepest condolensces to you and your family in the passing of Greg.

I am sorry I do not know Ken Barron, but if in some way I ever come in contact with him, I will pass this knowledge to him.

I heard Kenny was at the Stanford Jazz Festival this year & he did a tribute to Greg Symsen.

Yes, Kenny did an emotional tribute to Professor Symsen and those of us from the "Academy" were very moved.  I personally felt that Kenny's decision to perform only mime instead of the usual musical piece was appropriate and refreshing.

That must have been incredibly moving.  Kind of like that "missing man" formation that the military jets fly.

Dear Learn Jazz Piano,

I am so happy that Mr Barron dedicated a performance to my dear husband.  This is the first news I have heard of it, but I am very exited that mr flapjack has contact with Mr Barron.  Please could you pass on my regards to Mr Barron and please could you pass his contact number to me.

My brother is collecting some photos and an N3P? fyle of his playing, so that some of you who did not know dear Greg soon will.

Mr CynBad, I have not known Greg to ever perform at a Stanford Jazz Festival, and for most of this year he was in hospital with the Cancer that finally took him.  If you could let me know when you saw him as this piece of information is news to me.

I hope to update you with the NP3 fyles and pictures of my dear Greg soon.

Thanking you for your kind words about my Greg, I hope to hear more kind words.

Best Wishes

Mrs A Symsen

This whole thing smacks of 7.

It just occurred to me that perhaps mrs symsen simply is not a good speller.
Turns out there's a Gregg Simpson in the jazz world...

And Kenny Barron's pretty easy to find, if you really want to:
