I have a long summer holiday this year between the end of school and the beginning of university and I'm intending to go to USA (I'm UK-resident) to do some jazz programs (or courses as we call them).  I was wondering if there's  anyone out there who could give me advice as to which are the best course / teachers.  The programs I'm investigating are:

(1) Jazz in July - The Fine Arts Center at the University of Massachusetts - Amherst - with the Billy Taylor Trio (piano tutors are: Billy Taylor and Matt Richard).

(2) Berklee 5-week performance program (Massachusetts)

(3) Berklee in LA (5 days)

If none of this works out I might do the jazz course at Dartington (UK) - does anyone know anything about this either (it with directors Keith Tippett & Lewis Riley)?

Any help at all would be MUCH appreciated.

Many thanks,

Harvey

I cant help you much with US courses but there are some great UK ones. Burnley and Wavendon are great and there are many others which I will volunteer John Quinn to tell you about :-) LOL

Mentioned in dispatches again heh Rick :-)
Have heard of the Dartington school and I think it's mainly a classical summer school for 4 or 5 weeks with a Jazz strand to it.
Don't know if it's any good. Not really into Keith Tippett's stuff  as it's a bit too freeform for even for my ears :-), but I'm sure he can do straightahead stuff too.
Glamorgan has a good reputation and I can vouch for Rick's endorsement of Burnley and Wavendon (we don't get commission :-)). The Guildhall one should be a good one judging by the tutors involved. The Leeds college one is OK but is mainly based around Big Band playing and so nobody tells you about piano stuff. The Manchester one doesn't run anymore.
