LearnJazzPiano.com archives: Suggestions for Listening?
jbl81 -- 06/05/2004, 14:12:55 -- #4778
I'm asking for two suggestions:

1)  I've been practicing a lot of standards -- not trying to do anything fancy.  I'm just working on basics and trying to grow my repertoire.  So when I go to listen for pleasure, I like to try to find something different than the straight-ahead stuff I've been playing all the time.  Can anybody suggest some folks to listen to who you think are really  innovative or have an interesting or unique sound?

2)  I hate to bring up the controversial J word, but on the topic of Jarrett.  I'm in the camp of people that respect him artistically and technically, but haven't really found any stuff that I like (as far as style).  For someone who is in awe of the Kohn Concert but doesn't really get into that style, can anyone suggest some of his other stuff that is a little more swinging?  I saw a transcription floating around (maybe on here) of some gospel stuff he had done that looked pretty interesting.  Does anybody know that aspect of his playing enough to suggest any interesting recordings?

Thanks guys!  jbl

all of his trio recording with jack Dejohnette and Gary Peacock.... they are many.

Tokyo 96/Up For It would be a good place to start.

As for question one...

groups that Ive been listening to a lot recently and arent really your normal definition of jazz (at least really not beboppy anyway)

Tomasz Stanko's new quartet (2 new albums out on ECM)
Paul Bley/Gary Peacock/Paul Motian
John Taylor/Marc Johnson/Joey Baron
Django Bates' Human Chain- he has a standards album (Quiet Nights)...its quite simply amazing, standards as youve never  heard them before

Plus I would add that in my 25+ years in the J biz I found Jarrett controversial no where except here at LJP.  I have run into a very scant few critiquing his whining sounds, but they always qualified there critiques to say that he was still the best in spite of it.  Another words LJP, for whatever reason I do not know, is not representitave of the world at large when it comes to appreciating Jarretts place amongst Jazz pianists.

Yeah...I mean you can have opinions on whether you like a piece of music or not, or an opinion on whether someone is good/bad whatever, and Im all for that, who's to say what's right or wrong?

But...(and being a hypocrit of the highest order here) Im one of those schmucks who believes that Jarrett's music doesnt need an opinion to stand up as the best...the music speaks for its self

Plus it has been heavily documented and debated amongst the masses and those certainly in  the know- the current consencous (spelling?) is that Jarrett is the greatest living improviser. (I think that could even be extended and still be justified)

I think one of the problems with Jarrett is that he has such a large body of work that people may listen to the "wrong recordings". Or they may not be aware that his solo concerts are fully improvised.

Hence my post..  I'll give those recordings a listen and see what I have been missing =)

Nope.  I was aware.  And that's the basis for my saying "he's technically brilliant and artistically geniuis".  I just don't dig the style.  Hopefully that will change after listening to your suggestions though.. we'll see.

lol that wasnt a dig at you. Just some people out there- its not acknowleged on his albums you see (it rather stupidly says "composed" by Jarrett)

As for awesome solo concerts:

La Scala
Bregenz
Lusanne

No, you were fine.  I just sometimes seem rather blunt.. We're on the same wavelength =)
