LearnJazzPiano.com archives: Shorter's Algeria

After degrading my standing in our jazz community by asking about Jamie Cullum, I feel I need to bolster my cool rating. As such I want to tell everyone how I really love a new track by Wayne Shorter - Sacajawea. I don’t know how to pronounce it, but its on the Algeria Album.

I don’t know about the rest of the album as I haven’t listened to it all yet but I really get this track. Anyway I’ll put this link to Amazon (I’m not advertising, just being helpful) so that you can listen to the free clips they have of a couple of tracks there – I’d don’t necessarily recommend buying it there of course! http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00007LL7N/qid=1075797792//ref=pd_ka_1/103-8428208-6624647?v=glance&s=music&n=507846

Your standing in MY "jazz community" (consisting of myself and my conviction that any player who has an interest in music in general and isn't afraid of being "uncool" is certainly not degrading themselves) hasn't been impacted.....BTW I've never heard of Jamie Cullum or the tune..so-called "smooth jazz"?....how many "hated" smooth jazz players, assumed to be the very antithesis of everything jazz represents and some kind of "automatons" turning out prefabricated elevator music are in reality the type of players you find at all the stereotypical "real jazz"identity-defining scenes like jam sessions, local gigs, who often for financial reasons involving marriage  and children, are also producing this style in addition to being as masterful at playing "bebop and beyond" as your so-called "real jazz players"....
