I've decided to dig myself into latin piano playing for this summer. I'm working on the books "101 Montunos" and "The salsa guidebook" by Rebeca Mauleon.

In the former, the author starts with a chapter about the foundations of afro carribean piano (1840's-1950's) in which she mentions some old styles of music (zarzuela, contradanza, musica campesina, trova, habanera, charanga) along with excerpts from early cuban pieces such as :

"Los Ojos  de Pepa" by Manuel Saumell (1840)
"Danza Cubana n°2" by Igniacio Cervantes (1875)
"La Carcajada" by Igniacio Cervantes (1878)
"Danza Lucumi" by Ernesto Lecuona
"Las alturas de  Simpson" by Miguel Failde (1879)

She also mentions some composers such as Manuel G.Tavarez, Juan Morel Campos (Porto Rico) and Jose Urfe.

I wonder if anybody in here ever heard of  scores or recording of such old piano pieces....I'm really looking for 19th/early 20th century stuff. Even articles, books, etc would be a good start to satisfy my curiosity.

Thanks

Seb: You are in the right way with Rebeca's books about latin music. That's the best stuff i have seen about it. Please complete your material with Latin Real book compiled by her.

I do have the latin real book, but I'm really looking for recordings scores, info about composers etc.....

Yesterday evening I went to a latin jam session, I tried to play some montunos but it's really tricky when you don't know the language, with all these claves, cascara,.... all these rythms crossed with each other.... Big problem with endurance, staying at your place in the middle of the rythms pattern... with all these upbeats.
I'll work hard to understand the basics elements  (mauleon books are very clear) and make it during summer vacations I hope :))

Again, info about where to find scores, recordings of 19th century cuban piano music is welcome :)
