| ` "Any pianist that could sit down and duplicate Art Tatum performances note for note would certainly be putting magic in the air even though there were no improvisation involved I guess though I do not think we will see the day that will happen." http://www.JeffreeBrent.com/MP3S/7playsTatum'sAuntHagar.mp3 Solo piano, note for note. Many thanks to John Mehegan. | |

| As I was studying through the Mehegan series, I came across Mehegan's transcription of this Tatum piece in his 1962 book "Jazz Rhythm and the Improvised Line" (pgs 83-89). It is an excellent transcription, but without the recording to listen to you're sunk. Permit me to posit that the deficiencies inherent in standard music notation make it impossible to elicit the feel and rhythmic nuances of Jazz, no matter how meticulous the transcription - and especially in Tatum's case. The LP I have is: Capitol Jazz Classics Vol. 3 M-11028 "Art Tatum Solo Piano" Recorded in Los Angeles 7/13/49 | |
