| Hello I just noticed that the "Monthly Standards" section hasn't been updated in a while. did people stop this thing? I thought it was a great way of learning new tunes and seeing differen't aproaches for different songs. Maybe there should be a new monthly standard this month? Doc-Z | |

| Yeah, the monthly standard was my idea originally and it was really interesting to see how different people approached the same tune. The only problem was that, towards the end of the old site, there were only a couple of us posting stuff. I have to admit, I didn't even post a version of speak low because there really didn't seem to be much interest in it. Having said that, the new site seems to have attracted more visitors than ever so there may be a few more people who would be up for it. For those of you that don't know, the idea of the monthly standard room is that we take a tune every month and look at it in detail with the aim of making a solo piano arrangement of it. Ideally, all the people involved would post a midi file of their own version(s) of the tune. Other people will then be able to listen to the versions and maybe get some ideas from them and/or help people out with suggestions as to how they can improve. The beauty of this is that everyone can get involved regardless of ability. Beginners can get some great advice from more experienced players like Scot and 7 for example and they, in turn, can also post their versions of the tune for other people to learn from. The more I think about this, the sorrier I am that we let it slide, so unless Scot has any objections, I'd like to start the ball rolling again. So for July 2004 I'm going to suggest 'How High The Moon' as the monthly standard - this is a good tune to practice those all important ii-V chops on and is straightforward enough for most people to be able to make an attempt at it. Although I know the tune I've never actually played it before so it will be a voyage of discovery for me too. If anyone needs a chart for this, please let me know. If you don't want to put your email address in plain view then feel free to PM me. I'll start the ball rolling by posting an analysis in the Monthly Standards room in the next few days. All future discussions should be conducted in that room from now on. I hope you'll get involved in this as I've always thought that this kind of co-opertaion could be one of the most beneficial aspects of LJP. Hopefully, see you in the monthly standards room.... | Aha, I didn't realise we couldn't create rooms in that Hall!. Mr Scot, would you be kind enough to create us a 'How High The Moon' room please? | |

| Barry, I'm a very beginner in playing Jazz, so is there any sense to send my version of the standard?? It would be rather poor :/ On the other hand, the beginners may be interested in beginner's playing as it's easier to transcribe :) hehe... Kabar | |

| Kabar, This could really help a beginner. If you posted your version, perhaps some of us could give you some tips on how to improve on the version you've come up with. I'd love to hear your version. This goes for anyone - don't be afraid that it's not 'good enough' because the whole point if this is that there are good players here who would be prepared to listen to your efforts and help you improve - it's like getting jazz piano lessons for free.... What a site! It does exactly what it says on the tin! :-) Barry | |

| I've been involved in a lot of heavy projects lately, and I haven't had time to work "Speak Low" up to performance standard. Eventually I will though. The first thing I do is listen to every version of the Monthly Standard I can find online before getting my feet wet. So far I like Cal Tjader's version best. 7 | |

| Ok, I had some motivation to record a few of the monthly standards. Haven't gotten to the most recent (How High The Moon) but will do that soon. I highly recommend to everyone to use the Monthly Standard resource. There's no better place except a live master class to get feedback on your playing. | |

| Question for everyone: Should the monthly standards rooms have file upload areas, or should people post a message and attach a file to it instead? Maybe more people would participate if the message itself had a file attached. Not sure. | |
| docz -- 07/15/2004, 14:24:01 -- #5765 | |
| good idea!, but what about both? Doc-Z | |
| Scot -- 07/15/2004, 15:31:41 -- #5775 | |
| Well, in fact, the new file system I'm working on will allow for both. It's going to overhaul how files are handled, so that they are lot more intuitive. | |
