| I just wanted to nominate Fly me to the moon as the monthly standard for september. The moon was so full and bright when I left Crete on sunday, and since then I couldn't get this song out of my head, and I would love to hear some of your guys enterpretations of it. So therefore I nominate "Fly me to the moon" as this months standard :) Doc-Z | |

| I put the old "fly me tothe moon" room in the main hall and changed the name to "monthly standard". The room description says what the current tune is. | |

| Whacky- Thanks for asking. I'm going to the University of Missouri - Kansas City. Classes only started about a week ago, but I'm having a great time and I can tell they are going to work me very hard. My first sax lesson was kind of an eye-opener. He basically told (in the most kind and gentle way possible) that I have only the most minimal understanding of music, and that my technique is totally wrong. Oh well, I guess it's all for the better... | |

| Look at it this way- if he didn't say "pack up your horn and go home" there's hope for you :) Practice really hard at everything your teacher gives you. When you are going to school, don't spend a lot of time on music that is not in your program or area of studies. Teachers hate that. Work hard on your lesson plans, work hard on your combo music (if you are in one), and don't work on anything else. If you feel like you want to work on other stuff, bring it up with your teacher. It might sound boring, but I guarantee that for the most part, university teachers know what they are doing and if your teacher sets a lesson plan for you, the best thing you can do is practice your butt off and come back next lesson knowing it better than you were expected to. Trust me on this- you'll go a long way in your school career if you do it this way. | |

| I had the opposite experience: At the end of the semester, one of my music professors had a policy of discussing grades one-on-one with each student on the last day of class. He said "Your test scores are almost perfect every time, but why don't you ever do your homework or turn in assignments?" I told him it was because I was gigging regularly and all my free time went into putting together my repertoire. And that was the truth. He gave me a "B+" and bascially said that there are more important things in life than kissing your teacher's butt. Bottom Line: Some university professors are actually aware that there is a real world out there. | |

| Yeah and I had one theory class where I fell way behind on assignments because I was gigging a lot. I asked the professor at the end of the semester what I could do to make up the work. He said, "what? you know this shit...you got an A" On the other hand my piano teacher always gave me Bs because I didn;'t work hard enough. I was playing tons of gigs and got straight As on my recitals...but... That's why I said ya never know with these guys:) Okay, one more...a flute player friend of mine was told he was so far behind everyone else that he'd have to practice 8 hours a day for a year just to catch up...he attempted suicide...thankfully he failed and now makes big bucks in the computer field - oy! Like Scot said, just do what they say and practice your butt off...especially while your young...as you get older and concentrate on making a living and possibly raising a family, it becomes harder to find practice time...or when you do...you just might be too damn tired:) | |
