LearnJazzPiano.com archives: standard tunes adapted to clave

I've heard a lot of Monk tunes adapt well to clave ... haven't had time to explore this yet.

Ones I've done:
Airegin (Sonny Rollins) 3-2
Relaxin' at Camarillo (Parker)  3-2
Naima  (Coltrane)  6/8, 2-3 clave

What  other traditionally swung tunes do you play in this style?

As many as possible :)

I really like:

Have You Met Miss Jones
Angel Eyes
Misty
Somewhere Over The Rainbow
Night and Day
Speak Low (latin/swing, or just latin works too)

Really, almost any tune works.

For fun, try playing some rhythm changes that way, too! Lots of fun.

Just wondering if anyone could point to any solo piano midi examples of this: a well known tune played in a standard rhythm, and then played adapted to clave. I'm afraid I'm a bit of a dunce with written notation - I don't really learn until I hear stuff.

I went from a swing feel to a latin groove on the out head of a version of 'Stella by Starlight'.  I can't say if it was strict clave - I can't remember to be honest!  You should be able to find it in the Stella room in the monthly standards section of this site.

You might want to look into that Michel Camilo recording that has St. Thomas on it- released a couple years ago (or so). Not too much solo, but some standards done in very cool ways that might give you some hints.

Try to find some recordings by Don Pullen- hard to find, and not strictly clave, but lots of latin, groove, and other neat stuff.

Check Concord Records and see if any latin jazz players did a recital for their Maybeck Recital series also.

Thanks Scot -- I like Sonny Rollins' St. Thomas; I'll try to find the Camilo recording.  "Another Kind Of Blue" by, I think Conrad Herwig and Dave Valentin, is another good one where well known tunes are adapted to these type of rhythms.
