Hi, i've uploaded part of some improvisation by someone (above link, copy and paste) and I wanted to know what I am hearing exactly. What scale is he running up and is there cromaticism I am hearing when he comes back down? Could someone please help me out and explain what he is doing?

Thank you,
Andrew

I'm just going to look at that first scale run thing.  First a disclaimer- I might not know what I'm talking about :)  However, this is what I'm personally hearing on a quick run through of your mp3.

From what I could hear, that's the Db  minor melodic scale your player is running through at least for the Bbm7 b5. Maybe it stays there for the Eb7 chord, but it might also go into a Diminished scale (start on C).  These is a very importat scale to learn how/when to play.
Db Melodic Minor Scale (for the Bbm7 b5):
Db Eb Fb Gb Ab Bb C Db

C Diminished scale (for the Eb7, try Eb7 #9):

C Db Eb E F# G A Bb C

Resolves to an Ab minor chord and it appears your player is also doing the Ab melodic minor scale on that chord:

Ab Bb Cb Db Eb F G Ab

There are a lot of files on this site dealing with that kind of stuff- do a search for "melodic minor" and see what comes up.

This clip is a really good example of using that stuff.

The best thing to do is download it, then transcribe it. Maybe it takes a month, but you'll be a lot better player for it when you are finished.

And then upload it here as a midi file.
