LearnJazzPiano.com archives: McCoy's Percussive Style Recordings
ziggysane -- 10/10/2004, 20:59:12 -- #7910
Hey Gang. Self Explanitory: Can anyone give me some specific tracks that demonstrate McCoy's "percussive" style that I've heard so much about?  Thanks.

"The Real McCoy"..it is one of his best albums! He plays together with Joe Henderson. Beautiful...

One of the best McCoy recordings I have EVER heard, and he is jamming so hard I can't believe the piano doesn't fall apart, is:

Hip Toe (Live At The Musician's Exchange Cafe)

Some great tunes such as Senor Carlos and a few others are in it.  I've listened to this recording so much that I can sing along with each of the songs.  I highly recommend it!

You can get it:

...and don´t forget all the great blue note albums he has appeared on as a sideman, for example Wayne Shorter´s "Juju" or Joe Henderson´s "In ´n out". Amazing!

I should mention that the recording above, Hip Toe, is one of my "desert island" recordings. That is, if I were to be stuck on a desert island, this is one of the ten recordings I'd want to have with me.

There is a LOT of great McCoy stuff out there, and most of it is damn good.  But that Hip Toe recording is something else!

This thread prompted me to log on to emusic.com and download some recordings for 'comping listening'. Having done this I discovered that I can't play these in Media Player.  Question for you knowledgeable gurus please.  Do I HAVE to download their emusic player or can I convert these filed to a format that will play in Media Player?  tks.  Kai.

What kind of file does emusic give you? What is one of the file names?

Gordon -- 10/12/2004, 12:40:57 -- #7966
The tunes I get from emusic are mp3 files.  If your files also have this extension then you can play them with something like winamp: http://www.winamp.com/.

If you really want to convert the files, you could probably do it with a program like easy cd da extractor: http://www.poikosoft.com/ :

Input formats: MP1, MP2, MP3, WMA, Ogg Vorbis, MP4, M4A, AAC, FLAC, Musepack, WAV, Shorten, and Monkey's Audio
Output Formats: MP3, Windows Media Audio 8, Windows Media Audio 9, Windows Media Audio 9.1, Ogg Vorbis, MP4, M4A, AAC, FLAC, Musepack, VQF, WAV, AIFF, and Monkey's Audio, and any command line encoder

"Enlightenment"is probably the best one for this type of  thing..it's a live 2-record set w/one of his great 70's bands(Azar Lawrence,Juney Booth, one of the great drummers(forgot which)who played that kind of latin-rock-jazz feel he was into then...BTW for some related s--t take a look at the thread"recommended listening" one page in.........

The files are all  .emp files.  I've not heard of this file extension. Thanks guys for your responses.

I'm not sure, but this could be something to do with not having the download manager software. - Or maybe having a version incompatible with your OS. I'm running Windows.
On my machine I need to have the download manager program in order to be  able to buy a whole album at once. I remember trying to download on a machine that didn't have the download manager, and I think I got an .emp file

Yep, checked it out with their customer service and I would need to download their player and the appropriate version for Windows XP.  I'm not sure I'll bother.  Thanks for your response.  Kai
