LearnJazzPiano.com archives: The new "Old Real Book" 6th Edition
Jazz+ -- 11/09/2004, 10:47:29 -- #8785
Hal Leonard has just published a semi-clone of the old oringinal "The Real Book".
The first thing I noticed when I got my copy was that the cover is  paper and the pages won't last as long as the original, they used very thin light weight paper. Some of the pages are out of sequence, for example: Lush Life page 2 come three pages later than Lush Life page 1.

I was also very sorry to see some of the great standards had been left out. Here are some tune NOT INCLUDED:

Alone Together
Days Of Wine And Roses
The Dolphin
Gentle Rain
Goodbye Pork Pie Hat
Green Dolphin Street
In Your Own Sweet Way
Just Friends
Night And Day
Shadow Of Your Smile
Serenade To A Cuckoo

They also included a lot of never played fusion tunes.

I disagree with some of what you said.  It seems to be made of the same material as the illegal copies my friends have.  Also, my copy of the book seems to be in order (specifically Lush Life is fine).

I think that it has fewer fusion tunes than the original.

As for those other standards, I agree that they are a loss.  I have resolved this with bringing a binder with those other tunes with me.  I just carry both books in a satchel that I take everywhere.

Interesting- must have had some copyright issues. From what I understand, the book contains 95% of what the old ones contained.

On another note, those tunes above, for the most part, are tunes we all should know anyway!!

The Old Real Book I have was printed on good heavy weight paper. Since it was always an underground book, different people produced it with different quailty paper. My point was that the Hal Leanord edition uses very light paper to cut their costs. It will not last as long as a book with a plastic cover and heavy paper. I think they planned it wear oiut so we will have to replace them eventualy, like light bulbs and disposable razors are intentionaly planned to wear out.

I replaced my illegal version because it tore up so many times I can
not begin to count

Yeah, I think all of the illegal ones I have seen have either lost the cover or have a cover held on with duct tape.
