| Hi there. Being known as a pianist in school, I was asked to help out at the awards show of a mathematic competition. My job has two major aspects: 1.) The main part 2.) The minor part 1.) Main part Task: Play something, accompanied by a violin. Question: What do I do? I have only very, very little time and have no idea what to play. Same applies to the violinist. We are in big trouble. Any idea what to do? 2.) Minor part Task: I am supposed to "fill the gaps": play something when the winners of the competition are announced. That should take about 20 seconds. What do you think I could play? Should perhaps be something vivid or happy !? Any idea? Please help me out, I got only few time left :-( | |

| Part 1. You don't say how much time you've got to fill. Maybe a little classical violin / piano duet that is not too difficult or familiar to one of you will do the trick. Part 2: The Gaps Do you have to fill the time as the winners walk to the stage? Or do you simply have to make some noise when the winners are announced? I usually do a trumpet fanfare followed by a long tremelo. F - dum da da dah A - dum da da dah C - dum da da dah Tremelo full chord with high F - daaaaah * To break it up you can do the "Baseball Charge" C > G > A > B > C > G > A > B > C# > G# > A# > B# > C# > G# > A# > B# > D > A > B > C# > D > A > B > C# > D > D > F# > A > High D > A > High D The chromatic key changes can go on as high as you want depending on how much time you have to fill. I know that all sounds pretty dumb (and it is) but it's easy, it works, and everybody will love it. | |

| Bach seems appropriate for a show piece at a mathematics competition. Check out this link: http://www.sheetmusicarchive.net/single_listing.cfm?composer_id=2 Scroll down until you hit "10 little pieces adapted for violin and piano" and you can download some sheet music. Unfortunately there isn't anything jazzy there, if that is what you were interested in. For a jazz tune I would just concentrate on a tune you are both familiar with, with simple chord changes. Do you know "Blue Moon"? Thats a familiar tune that sounds nice on the violin. You can get the chord changes on this web site by clicking on "lead sheets" at the top. Transpose it into the key of C if you want to make it easier. | |

| For part 2: Select a seventh chord. Violin improvises quickly over chord notes. You play rhythmic chords. You will find some practical tips in file "Beginning improvisation". | |
