| Hi, I was wondering if anybody could give me a little bit of info on the rhythmic stylistic difference between Roy Haynes, Tony Williams, Jack Dejhonette and Elvin Jones? Just seeing whats out there, I had to write a paper on this for my Rhythm class so I decided to see what all you guys know, maybe something cool I could add in??? Huh?? Thanks Mack | |

| Man, you need someone who is deep into that sort of thing. I know Marc Seales knows all about that stuff... The thing is, all four of the guys you mention are kind of in a similar school of music, so it's hard for me to show how one is a lot different from the other. They all have their points of strength, but they all are sort of the kinds of guys who don't just "keep time", they tend to do stuff that unless you're really listening you can get thrown off. Contrast that with guys like Buddy Rich who was always on top of the beat, or Jeff Hamilton who has a perpetual 2/4 going, and other guys... Sorry I can't be of more help, I'm just not personally familiar enough with the differences to say much. One thing I can say is that you might want to look at the timeline of when they started, and which ones influenced each other, you know? I KNOW there are guys here (Jazz+, SMG, others) who can answer your question much more thoroughly, though. | |
