LearnJazzPiano.com archives: Recommend a book of jazz piano arrangements?
Jazz+ -- 12/05/2004, 17:17:18 -- #9490
Can you recommend a book of jazz piano arrangements that is at the easy level for beginner-intermediate pianists wanting to play some jazz arrangements that sound pretty good?

Jazz+ -- 12/05/2004, 17:18:15 -- #9491
Fully notated for both hand and not difficult please. Ballads would be ideal.

Play Like A Pro.  Over 70 arrangements from names like Ellington, Mary Lou Williams, Brubeck, Andy Laverne, Sir Roland Hanna, Bud Powell, Waller, Harry Connick Jr., and many others.

To counter, does anyone know if there's a transcription of Bill Evans' virtuoso rendition of "My Man's Gone Now" out there?

I don't find "Play Like A Pro", jazz piano with a Google search. Is it that CD Rom?

I think you are talking about Dick Hyman's "Century of Jazz Piano"

Play Like a Pro: 72 Piano Arrangements With the Professional Touch/Pf 0900
by Stuart Isacoff (the Arranger)

How are the arrangements?

I assume you're getting this for one of your students.

I had tons of luck with Oscar Peterson's "Jazz for the Young Pianist".

There are practical exercises, each of which are followed by an étude (arrangement) which both  interesting musical and useful elsewhere.

Unfortunately it is out of print, but maybe there are still some copies floating around.

Hey.  Since it's out of print, i did a search.  The etudes are posted at (cough) Http://pianosheets.org (cough). :) Useful for anyone else who would like to seek them out as well.

if u like vince guaraldi, I would highly recommend 'the peanuts songbook'.  It has great, not too hard to play jazz arrangements of the charlie brown songs, along with many christmas tunes.

Oscar's 'Jazz For The Young Pianist' is NOT out of print.  It's available from Musicroom.com - they have all three (cheap) volumes.  If you want copies, I suggest you get it now, before they're all gone!!

I'd also recommend any or all of the following:

Dave Brubeck: Nocturnes - Piano Solo
Dave Brubeck: The Genius of Dave Brubeck - Book 1 - Piano Solo
Dave Brubeck: Two-part Adventures Origianl Two-part Arrangements
Favorite Jazz Piano Solos Revised - Arr Tom Roed

Blues For Piano - Arr Jack Long
I Gotta Right To Play The Blues - Piano Solo
