you tube question   (post message)
Scot w p -- 01/21/2008, 09:39:57 -- #39874
Hey Folks,

I recall seeing a Monty Alexander youtube video a few months ago that was some kind of jamaican all star band.  They played a great little calypso riff tune of some kind.  But now the video is gone, mostly all I see now when I search for Monty is his trio stuff.

Do youtube videos expire automatically off the server?  Do people sometimes take their videos down?

I'm disappointed in this case, I don't remember the name of the song and I wanted to get it down today, it seems like such a fun tune.

Thanks.

I think they're sometimes taken down for copyright infringement

I love that second one

Those are a lot of fun, but the one I'm looking for isn't a trio tune, it's Monty with a big group of his Jamaican musician friends.  Horns, steel drums (at least one), guitar, it's like a calypso jamboree or something.  I've searched high and low, have a feeling it was pulled for some reason.

knotty w -- 01/21/2008, 14:20:25 -- #39882
they take them out all the time. Not automatic but like whack said, copyright. Or because they feel like it.

Fortunately, you can download youtube videos, that's what I do when I don't want it to go away.

Hey, I think I know what video you are thinking of, I was looking for it to recently, and I am not 100% sure but I think they where playing the Stevie Wonder tune Isn't She Lovely.

funk p -- 01/22/2008, 04:17:36 -- #39887
glennsf - indeed, Scott might be referring to Isn't she lovely.
The steelpan player in that video is Othello Molineux, who played a long time with Monty, but the rest of the rythm section is all american. it is from the late 70s. Indeed they pulled this one of.
When Monty plays with his Marley project most of the band is from Jamaica, but I've never seen a video of this band on you tube.

If you are a Mac user, there's a $15 piece of software called Tubestock that can copy down the video (or if you prefer audio only) of most youtube clips.

Scot w p -- 01/22/2008, 13:15:37 -- #39897
I justed check it out, yep, that's the tune, "Isn't She Lovely".

The basic tune is easy and grooving, but man, Monty of course did it up his way.  I'll keep my eyes open for it, hopefully it will be posted again at some time.

elwapo -- 01/22/2008, 23:05:02 -- #39907
Its free to copy down youtube videos just go to saveyoutube.com and follow the instructions. You need to download an flv player first which is free

Hey Scot, have you tried to find this video on Dailymotion which is another website for sharing videos (the french version of youtube if you prefer ..)
Searching for Monty Alexander, I focused on that one (Montreux 1977) with the great Dizzy, very cool :

I actually own the video of that concert :)

For saving the files, thanks for all your suggestions. I use a utility made by SoThink, the sothink web video downloader. It works well and tends to be intelligent enough to know which video you want as well.

Does anyone have (or have listened to extensively) that "Isn't She Lovely" Monty video that used to be on YouTube?  I've been searching for a DVD online, cd, whatever, can't find it.

I must know what he did in the introduction, it was very cool how he transitioned into the opening ascending lick.

I know it's from the 1979 North Sea jazz festival, and though there are some hard copy videos for sale, none of them seem to be of the Monty set.

knotty w -- 02/22/2008, 15:36:32 -- #40436
apparently, you can listen to the whole tune if you create an account ... better than nothing

I listened to the one on imeem.com, I wonder if it's the same intro?  I think the intro he played with the kingston band was different, probably inspired by the jazz festival situation or something.

Thanks for looking, though!
