Guidelines for finding a piano teacher:
  1. 99.9% of all jazz piano teachers worth taking lessons from are also professional gigging musicians. You want to perform, so take lessons from a performer.
  2. Do your research. It is your responsibility to find the right teacher.
  3. Go to the teacher's gigs. Do you like their playing? Good, get some lessons from them. If they aren't gigging, don't waste your time.
  4. Classical lessons: In addition to this resource, some good places to find classical piano teachers are music departments of universities and community colleges (masters piano students are often great teachers), and sometimes churches.
  5. Don't take the first teacher that comes along. Test drive your teachers. Take your time. The day of the desperate student is OVER. We have YouTube, websites, all the information you need to find the teacher that is exactly right for you.
  6. Skype Jazz Piano Lessons: Many jazz teachers including Scot Ranney do lessons via skype, google hangouts, and other means including phone. Use the contact link at the top of the page to inquire about lessons with Scot.
