i am looking to buy some good cd recorder to record my piano playing, and i was wondering if anyone else has bought anything recently that they would recommend (and microphone recommendations).  does it make a difference to have stereo recording for just solo piano?  are there things that record digitally onto tape, which can then be transferred perfectly to a cd (it would be nice to be able to record over without going through tons of cds).  any advice people have about recording solo piano would be helpful.

buy a mini-disc recorder with one of those small sony stereo mics. turn off all compression. when you are done recording, transfer it to your computer to burn a cd.  if that's a more work than you want, then there are several manufacturers (tascam, roland, yamaha) who make digital 4-tracks and the like, and some of them have cd burners built right in. they are a bit more pricey than using a mini disk recorder of course.

the upside of a mini disc system is that you can use it to bootleg concerts whenever you want :)

does the mini-disc with a small mic really produce a good sound? i had always thought bigger was better.  i don't suppose you could post a small recording made with one of these (or refer me to one you already have posted here).  does it have inputs for two mics for stereo input, or does this not really matter?  thanks for the advice.
the minidisc mic made by sony records what you hear. i've been using it for close to two years now and it's just amazing.

i don't have any samples, unfortunately.

the minidisc mic has one output, stereo, 1/8" inch, and the minidisc player will have a stereo 1/8" mic input.

if you go this route, make sure you check the minidisc specifications carefully!  sony is screwing people by not including mic inputs and stuff. fact is, i wouldn't go sony at all on the minidisc  recorder. maybe aiwa would be the way to go.

i have the md707 from sony and it cost me $160 (or so). i enjoy it except that i have to download songs in real-time since they don't allow digital transfers of recorded music, even if it's your own damn music. pisses me off, really, but regardless, the music is of a high audio quality.

the sony mic i'm talking about, to touch on that once more, is a stereo mic. it's not big- maybe two inches from left to right, but it gets the job done. there are more expensive mics you can use for minidiscs, but what's the point? if you want to go expensive, then get one of those roland digital recording/mixer/master/burning all-in-one deals.

i would second the minidisc recommendation.  i've been using one to record performances of a quintet that i play with.  the sound quality is great--all instruments are heard clearly.  i'd also recommend looking for a recorder that supports mdlp  which offers greater compression.    although the sound quality with compression is somewhat worse (i still think it's fine), you can use it to record almost 5 hours of music on a single disc.   this is great for gigging---i just pop in  a disc, start recording and forget about it for the evening.  no need to change disks in the middle of a perfomance or anything.
yep, i got my minidisc (sharp) and a decent sony mic around christmas time and i love it.  the quaility is fantastic.  i can't remember the model no. right now as i'm not at home but i will let you know when i'm next on the computer at home.  i can't recommend it enough.

watch this space!
ok, so i have a minidisc player myself, but there is a problem. it records fine, and i can put it on my computer, but when it comes to burning a cd, i can't do that because the computer only lets you work with the recorded music in one program.
has anybody else had that problem?
my model is mz-n10
i wonder if anybody has any advise on what to do?
thanks
if you take music from your minidisc and record it into a wav file on your computer, you cn burn it with any software out there. i use nero.

i'm not sure i understand the problem?
