this may be a bit off topic, but last night i had the fascinating experience of watching a silent movie accompanied by a live pianist (neil brand). it was a bravura performance, and i was wondering if anyone here has any experience of, and insights into this work. it also struck me as being a rather good way of learning to portray various moods and emotions through improvisation.

wow, if i were you i wouldn't be watching the film at all, only listnening to the piano ;)  i just love performances with live piano playing, but i guess you have to be quite a good player to work like this

cool...when six flags first opened in our area, (1972 i think)they had a "silent movie night" and my dad was the pianist...i never got to see/hear him do that..i really wish i would have...that is a very  important part of music history...bravo to niel brand and whoever set that up!

in a movie with no audible dialogue, i would think the live piano thing would be very exciting!  on the other hand, i sometimes get distracted by  soundtracks in some movies...if the music is too good, i'll listen to it instead of the dialouge...anyone else?  hmmm...maybe if the music is "really good" it would be supportive rather than distracting...like john williams or danny elfman - i love their stuff
one of my early piano teachers in denver was hank troy. together we went through the joplin book cover to cover. he is also the guy that introduced me to dick wellstood.

one of hank's specialities is playing for silent movies, which he still  does on a regular basis.

due to his love for this style of piano, he collected tons of original scores for the silent movies (1895 to 1927) and has now donated the entire collection to the university of colorado at boulder library.

unfortunately hank does not have his own website, but he can be contacted through the denver musicians association.

i'm still in contact with hank (even though i last saw him over 20 years ago). great guy. terrific player.
