last week i got a hold of one of the many mid-60's coltrane quartet impulse reissues;there are a few out there and the tracks that i'm focusing on here are available on a few different cds'..3 in particular i fgured i'd mention because they directly deal with stuff peole here are asking about.unlike all other modes of learning/study;getting the right recordings to check out is probably the best way to see this stuff in action.of course it goes without saying that mts' approach to things, which i went into some detail about in a file that's attached to an earlier thread here at ll(use search)is also a big part of what's involved here...

1.softly as in a morning sunrise-the version from "live at the village vanguard" opens with a long trio exploration of what those guys were hearing harmonically;listening not only to what mccoy is doing but the pitches jimmy garrison is playing along with him will open up this tunes' changes for you...study this along with the section here at ljp on this song.....

2.re-recent threads about playing on an extended dominant-tonic vamp and the different types of structures that can be superimposed, listen to "afro blue" from the "live at birdland" session;the series of chords mt plays right before jc enters are a good example of how to do this and features voicings and concepts of root movement that are very much in use today..
3.there was a thread a while back about dealing with how to play on "my favorite things"...the live version of this with roy haynes on drums has the trio repeating a definite rhythmic figure behind the solo;compare the result with any  of the usual versions of this song (where the band, influenced by the jc group to play it but only to the point of getting the real book changes, then kind of "vamps" on the two chords ad nauseum....)
