i´ll be spending a weekend in paris in the beginning of november, and i figured it would be a good opportunity to listen to some nice jazz. i´ve never been there before, so i was hoping someone could give some good advice on where to go? that would be very helpful.

thanks in advance,
lars

hi larsfiil

there are a lot of clubs paris is the city for jazz in europe

check out duc des lombards, sunset, sunside, new morning , la baiser salle, divan du monde and a lot more...at fnac they have a list of all concerts.jazz is seriuos in france so be prepared to pay admission between 17 and 30 euros a show even in a cafe or bar...
if you stay a week, you can go to caveau des oubliettes (close to notre dame), they run a jam session every evening of the week, you only have to pay for a drink  (5€ for a beer) as admission fee.... (you can also get nothing but if the owner catches you, he'll want you out). the monday evening is the best day to get there, jam sessions usually starts at 11 pm more or less. another place is cafe universel, they play jazz every evening... tuesday is a vocal jam session i guess...

you can also check all the clubs with paying concerts, for this you buy a book in paris named pariscope where you'll get all the cultural program for a week, then you can choose to see who you want to see... for 20€ more or  less.

let me know when you come and i can try to check for you :) welcome in paris :))

by the way, where are you from?
thanks for the replies. patricio, 17-30 euros a show!? it´ll have to be quite good, then :-)

seb, that book, pariscope, sounds nice, i´m going to check it out. i´ll be in paris from the 5th to the 8th of november. i´m from denmark, up north. in the town i live in, we are lucky if there is live jazz maybe once every second month, so i´m looking forward to spend just a little time in paris :-)

by the way, what about record stores? i´ve heard about the universal megastore, but are there other stores that are better?
forget my previous post.  if i leave chicago for another us city it's probably going to be nyc.  paris does sound pretty enticing too, though.  i had considered it before when leaving college for the "real world".  i took a number of years of french in high school/college, but i've lost most of it.  how hard is it to get a work permit to go live there for a year or two?
record stores..... there are quite a few shops where they sell second hand records next to "jussieu" metro station. you'll find huge record shops named fnac, the biggest is the one in the center. there's virgin megastore (that's the only megastore i've heard about)on champs elysees, but i've not been there for years.... and i don't know about their jazz "department".

tell me what you plan to do and where you will stay, i can try to help you saving some time. (museum will be free of charge as it's the first week end of the month...but probably crowdy as well....)

here you'll find a map of paris metro...

there's also a little book you can find in most bars, the name is "lylo" it's free and it gives all the concert in paris, whatever the style, worthy to check (pariscope is about every cultural activity)

or just leave it there :)
