hi...
i'm writing an assignement about keith jarret at school, and besides describing his style and approach to standard tunes, i also have to analyse a couple of the songs. right now i'm analyzing "my funny valentine", and there is one chord that bugs me. in bar 15 and 16, the chords are abmin6 to bb7. how do you explain the abmin6? if it was major instead of minor, it could have been explained as subdominant to dominant to tonic (iv-v-i), but now?... hope you understand my question. any help is apreciated (sp?)...

it's minor borrowing also called mixed modes.
ab-6 is iv minor borrowed from eb melodic minor.
ab-6 is also a substitute for f-7b5 (they share the same notes inverted).

bar 15, 16 and 17 in my real book are:
| f-7 b5 | bb7 | eb f-7 |etc

it's a ii v i modulation into eb which is the relative major of c-
oh, now i see it. thanks alot, jazz+.
ab-6 can also be considered a "disguised" g7 b9 without the root.
the notes of the ab-6 chord are the same notes in a rootless g7 b9 b13

ab-6 is spelled ab, cb, eb, f

ab is the b9 of g7
cb is the 3rd of g7
eb is the b13 of g7
f is the 7th of g7
also, the 2nd mode of ab melodic minor yields a "bb7 sus b9" which is another type of altered bb7 v type chord.
the 6th mode of ab melodic minor is f-7 b5

therefore
| f -7 b5 | bb7 b9 |
is interchangeable with
| ab-6 | bb7 b9 |
jazz+, you sound like my piano teacher in disguise.

....are you prof. luke gillespie?
