i just bought myself the new powerbook from apple and am planning to buy the 88 keystation from m- audio. now i am looking for some good softsynths to use with. i have looked at native instruments, but they cost a lot of money... does anyone know of any cheap or free softsynths?

garageband has a lot of pretty good instruments. did you get gb 2.0 ? there are some really good audio unit instruments, but they aren't cheap. i've plugged ivory in the past - it's very good, but costs $ 329. linplug sells some good stuff, too.
logic 7 comes with lots of synths, but the pro package costs a thousand bucks.
there are several good mac os x music sites - google them.
anything you get free will not sound nearly as good as anything you buy.

firstly, to use any vsti pluggins (virtual studio instrument), free or not, your gonna have to get something that acts as a vst host such as cubase or i think logic does too for the mac. these wont exactly be cheap either. as for free pluggins, you might look at: https://www.yohng.com/ or https://www.mda-vst.com/. they provide a few free pluggins.

you may also check out https://www.rgcaudio.com/ for a  few soft synths.

they also offer a free soundfont player called sfz. https://www.rgcaudio.com/sfz.htm

just do a search for soundfonts and you can probly find some decent free ones, all you do is load them into that program and they will play. https://www.soundfonts.it/ offers a free selection of soundfonts, as well as some decent organ/rhodes plugins. i dont know if the pluggins there are mac compatable or not, but the soundfonts will work fine.
gb (which comes on all macs) will host audio unit plug-ins and soundfonts. vst format plugins may require a "wrapper" program to be usable.
if you've forked out enough $$ for a powerbook, what's a few more dollars for some good audio units? then again, any of the included garageband (or optional jampack) instruments can be used live.
