in an effort to further diversify my playing tendencies i've been looking into people of other nationalities put together phrases and all such in the context of jazz. in my searching so far, chick corea and makoto ozone are the only ones i've found.

anybody know of latin, japanese, or whatever pianists?
There are no comments, leave a comment.
might want to check out danilo perez.  https://www.daniloperez.com/default.aspx
you may take a listen to bebo valdes. he's aged about 86 and lately gigging through europe and the us. i attended a performance of his trio some months ago and he's great.
i enjoy a lot two of his recent cd's: "el arte del sabor" with his trio; and "lagrimas negras" with the flamenco singer diego el cigala.
isn't chick corea actually american?
lol, yes, chick corea is as american as they come, and a scientologist, too.
oscar peterson's a foreigner (canadian).
there are lots of jazz pianists from south america, cuba, europe, and even japan.
toshiko akiyoshi - jazz pianist and bandleader from japan.  although, she might be an american citizen now -- who knows?
and good ol' marian mcpartland from england, still playing and doing her piano jazz radio show at age 85(?).
michel camillo (cuban?) and eliana elias (brazilian).
i think michel camillo is from dominican republic.
rubalcava from cuba.
eddy martinez from colombia.
where was born the great chick?
chick corea was born in chelsea, massachusetts
lmao

well he must be of latin descent or something

also worth noting is a hiromi uehara

great chops in the crossover, avant garde, funk, rock, and who knows what variety
styles, on "my spanish heart" he wrote (liner notes) that he had both spanish and african heritage.  as do many americans.  i don't know why anyone would have thought he was "foreign".  he doesn't speak with an accent or anything.
even his father was an american trumpet player.
you havee to check out some scandinavian pianists! norwegian tord gustavsen on ecm. and the russian/norwegian olga konkova. and from sweden we have lars jansson and esbjörn svensson. and carsten dahl from denmark. and håvard wiik...he is a very  modern player and is a artist on the jazzland label.
ole, i think jan johansson has to be mentioned when talking about scandinavian pianists. the album where he plays swedish and russian folk songs is a classic...
you are right. too bad he died so young. a fantastic pianist...
edgar djangarov (i don't know if i spelled that right)is a young jazz prodigy from russia. this kid is a monster. check him out.
correction to my last post. the prodigy's name is eldar djangirov. sorry about that.
other scandinavian pianist also worth mentioning is

bobo stenson, anders persson, kasper willaume (plays with ed thigpen scantet)heine hansen, ben besiakov(plays a lot with billy hart search on the record label steeplechase), jon balke and so on.

sincerly

cool -- i heard this eldar the other day but didn't catch enough about him to find him (radio on the road).  he was indeed special!
two aristocratic english ladies travel to europe on the boat train from dover.

they arrive at berlin where a sign says "foreigners this way", which they ignore.

an angry official instructs them to use the correct channel.

"young man", they boom at the unfortunate fellow "we are english - you are the foreigners".

george shearing
dudley moore
joe zawinul
doug mackenzie

sid
doug mackenzie????
is that the same one i'm thinking of? lol
chucho valdez, gonzalo rubalcaba, eldar
sid,

isn't england in europe already? if they weren't traveling to europe from england, which dover were they coming from? dover, illinois usa? dover, hyderabad province india?

i once met a guy named ben dover. any relation?

what's a boat train? is it anything like a horse fly?

if they're aristocrats, why didn't they fly?

how did the angry official know they weren't german?

are you sure this thread isn't about alien pianists?

two aristocratic ladies travel to alpha centuari on the boat train from dover.

they arrive at mxyzptlk where a sign says "aliens this way", which they ignore.

an angry green six-legged official instructs them to use the correct channel.

"sir", they boom at the unfortunate fellow "we are humans - you are the aliens".
england is not in europe.
bite your tongue!

when i use the word foreign i didn't intend to communicate the connotation that accompanies "foreign".

foreign just isn't a good word. different nationalities. or something.

i'm not racist or anything; america is boiling pot. whatever. but celebrating the unique aspects which the different ethnic groups bring to america, and in this conversation jazz, is important. in fact, it is the very nature of jazz as america's music to accentuate different styles of playing piano usually grouped with different nationalities. so in the case of chick corea, he is (in george w. bush voice) american. i was focusing on his ethnicity as exhibited in his latin playing.

also, i checked out toshiko akiyoshi and i'm very impressed! good stuff.

i just realized danilo perez has a spot on wynton marsalis' jelly roll morton cd. niice.

eldar djangirov is..just....sick, i mean sick...in both technique and feeling...just nasty
hey styles!  i never thought you were being racist.
i just never considered chick corea's music to be very "ethnic".  he plays very little "latin" music -- though some of his most famous tunes are.
i always thought of him as very creative, very jazz.
check out "now he sings, now he sobs" for some classic stuff.
my favorite of his fusion-type albums was "the leprechaun".
i also like "my spanish heart" -- lots of "latin/spanish" stuff on that one.
