countdown by coltrane

i guess it would be an enormous challenge, but very rewarding to see the distinct forms that coltrane uses when he solos
anything off of "cannonball adderly quintet in chicago".  it has trane and cannonball on it.
ole, chet baker's solo on autumn leaves off of "she was too good to me" is a great melodic solo. check that out.
miles davis solo on so what and solar.
lester young has some short but sweet solos.  get the ken burns jazz disc and learn a few from his pre-war basie days.  he can show you a lot about phrasing.
if you listen to clifford browns solo ? [im sure there are more than 1]? on joyspring you wiil notice that artuto sandoval must have transcribed it on his album honoring brownie its very nice. how about coleman hawkins legendary solo body and soul. one of my very favorites is bill evans solo on i loves you porgy on the montreaux 1968 album [grammy winner]
as a former trumpet player, i second the chet baker/autumm leaves transcription (that was the first one i ever did).  the best part is you don't even need to slow them down to transcribe.  actually, any solo off the "she was too good to me" cd, and also anything clifford brown played...joy spring, blues walk, dahoud, night in tunisia....
good one gs_jon

lester was the man
