well, one of the things i like about the book are all the "new" melodic ideas and the way he presents them. i would take a few of the sections and go through them in about 8 keys with both hands to get the idea of the melody down.
then i would attempt some harmonization based on the harmony he suggests for each note.
then i would try to do some reharmonization and simplification of the harmonies he suggests.
then i would play around with the "shape" the melodic idea and see how i can fit it into a tune. all i would play is that melodic shape over the entire tune. i would start on any beat of a measure and slightly alter notes so that the melody i played fit with the tune's harmony.
i haven't done too much work with the book recently, but i think it's gotta be added to my morning practice, at least say, 15 minutes worth a day or something.
you can really hear some stuff from that book that great players have lifted and used in their own stuff. coltrane really comes to mind- you hear his licks throughout the book (but mostly in the first part... i wonder if 'trane made it to the end? :)

Jazz Piano Notebook Series
Volume 1 of this educational jazz piano book contains 15 jazz piano exercises, tricks, and other interesting jazz piano techniques, voicings, grooves, and ideas Scot Ranney enjoys playing.
"Latinesque"
Volume 2 has 14 jazz piano exercises and tricks of the trade, and quite a bit of it is Calypso jazz piano related material, including some Monty Alexander and Michel Camilo style grooves. Jazz piano education is through the ears, but books like this can help.
Volume 3 contains 12 jazz piano exercises and explorations by the acclaimed jazz piano educator, pianist, author, and recording artist Tim Richards.
Tim wrote the well known "Exploring Jazz Piano" and "Improvising Blues Piano" books and has several others to his name.
Volume 4 is by Jeff Brent, a jazz pianist, composer, teacher, and author of "Modalogy" and other acclaimed jazz theory and education books. In this book Jeff shares detailed analysis of transcriptions of live performances. He covers everything from the shape of the songs to the tricks and licks he uses in improvised lines to the ideas behind his lush chord voicings.
