i am thinking about getting a humidity control system installed in my upright piano.  my piano always goes seriously out of tune when the weather changes, and i think it would be more cost effective (and better for the piano) than paying for more tunings.  i live in the us southwest, where we use a swamp cooler during the summer, and the winter is bone dry.

has anyone else had one of these installed, or know anything about them (a good brand, effectiveness at keeping a piano more in tune, reliability, etc...)

i got that kind of system installed on my boston upright around six months ago.  after hearing about it through my classical teacher who highly recommended getting one, i mentioned the device to my tuner, who had one on him and installed it in that visit.  from what i've seen so far, its been keeping the pitch at a constant, never lets it get out of tune when the weather changes.  i really don't think there would be that many brands that would differ in quality, any one should do.  mine has been reliable the entire time i've had it, every now and then you have to fill it with water the same way you'd water a plant.  ask whoever tunes you piano about the system.  if you tune yourself, just check online, or at your local music store.  its a great investment i think you'll be happy you made.
my piano technician installed a "damp chaser" inside my piano (it's an upright/console).  my piano is generally in a cool, humid area.
it's basically a heater triggered by the temperature.  don't know how well that sort of thing would work in a hot muggy place.
a full "dampp-chaser" system will include a humidistat, dehumidifier rod, humidifier tank,  and low water warning light.  just make sure you periodically fill the tank with water.  the dampp-chasers work quite well in vertical pianos.
my piano seemed to be primarily affected by extreme low humidity. i bought an inexpensive humidifier for the house. the piano - and the occupants - are much happier. i can usually keep the humidity (measured at the piano) in the high 30's during the driest periods, and in the 40's at other times.
the higher summer humidity doesn't seem to bother it as much. of course, the heat pump removes a lot of the water from the air.
mine just has the damp-chaser rod.  we don't have a dryness problem here.
my dad installs these all the time. they work great from what he says. ill have to ask him about brands and where to get them.
