he sounded horrible to me. i thought john legend was better.
patrice rushen has been active in the smooth jazz field since the early 80´s. i saw her with lee ritenour last summer. she´s quite good, but maybe not fabulous.
patrice rushen is a fabulous mainstream jazz pianist.
she is outstanding.  i heard her just last year, with buster williams.  i was really impressed.
i had no idea she played like that because, like savage, i was under the wrong impression that she mostly did the "smooth jazz" stuff.
i hear you cynbad, i've heard and read from quite a few sources that she is indeed a marvelous player. she is perhaps best remembered by her r&b hit "forget me not's".

cynbad could you name a pianist or style that her sound most resembles?

first thing that comes to mind is herbie hancock, but it's really hard to compare people to each other.
everyone's unique.  and, i've only heard her play straight-ahead jazz at that one performance, with the buster williams quintet.  she was not playing solo or with a trio -- i'd love to hear her in that kind of setting.
i just know i was really impressed -- i didn't know she could play like that.
herbie was great as usual.
crap.  i missed it.  anyone know where the performance can be seen online?
check out stanley clarke's "jazz straight up" cd with patrice on piano. i've always liked her, and also thought she's in the same groove as herbie. she can also be heard on a few wayne shorter recordings, although more fusionish.

too bad i missed herbie on the grammy's though.
herbie hancocks performance was amazed me so much that i told myself  i wanna play like him-so i did a search for jazz lessons on the net and it let me here to this site.  i think it was on of the best perfomances on the grammys
looks like i missed watching the grammies because i was out listening to the dave peck trio at jazz alley!
i flipped back and forth, but never got into that sweet spot.
