Yamaha EWI

a friend of mine plays this electronic wind instrument, and is
interested in jamming with me. i am intriqued by it and wonder
if anyone out there has attempted playing piano alongside this instrument?

it's just a synth controller. it can make any sound you want via midi. shouldn't be a problem to play with your friend.

i have one and have even performed on it a few times with a band in public. its sound is only as good as the midi module it controls. the main problem i find is the over-sensitivity of the switches, so that what works perfectly well as normal sax or clarinet technique can sound very glitchy on the wind controller. this can probably be overcome by practice and also adjusting the attack of the sounds in the module, but i've never had the time to do much of that. but generally the yamaha wx is a fun tool, and very useful if you do a lot of midi sequencing.

the man on wind controller (he actually uses the akai ewi) is michael brecker. try to find some examples of his work - it'll amaze and inspire you.

i saw brecker last year with his quindectet - it was a good show but he also played the ewi unaccompanied for about ten minutes. very nice, but it i did get the impression that it was because the band didn't have enough material!

Volume 3 contains 12 jazz piano exercises and explorations by the acclaimed jazz piano educator, pianist, author, and recording artist Tim Richards.
