how about a good freeware alternative to finale notepad?  i don't think it's possible to create a quality score with finale notepad (although it's possible with some of their pay-to-play versions, even the cheaper ones), but, just for the sake of argument, what might get someone acceptable results in windows or linux (not mac)?
might as well just make the upgrade to finale full version.  if you are or know any students/educators you may be able to take advantage of the large discount.  also, sibelius has a nice program that is worth researching.

or... what's wrong with some manuscript paper, nice pen, and a copy card?  most of best composers still write out their music by hand and let someone else enter it into a computer (or not).  plus, chicks dig high quality manuscript notators ;-)

i must be missing something here.  finale notepad is entirely free and it works just fine for creating quality scores, i use it all the time and the end results are virtually indistinguishable from printed sheet music. it works especially well to create "enhanced" fake sheets (i add some notes on bass and rh chords that i might forget.) the only thing i've found next to impossible to control are grace notes.  the only reason i upgraded (and not to the full but just the cheaper plus) was to get the midi to sheet music feature.  each new version has made it easier to enter notes although like any computer application it takes a little practice and a cheatsheet on shortcuts to achieve speed and accuracy.  i must sound like a commercial but as a satisfied user i now wonder what it is i'm missing out on?
