what makes art tatum the man of the 20th century? his runs of course! his runs astounded a great number of people(including me). he was often considered the greatest jazz piano soloist ever. unlike teddy wilson, he improvised a great deal in his solos. the question i have is what makes up good runs in jazz piano?

choice of notes, pearly smoothness, accuracy.
what did art tatum do?
what kind of runs did he use mostly during his improvisation? were they mostly made up of scales, arpegios? etc...
with respect, i think that to say teddy wilson did not improvise in his  solos is more than simply innacurate.

having said that, if you are looking to define the elements of an improvised jazz line, you may want to look at hal galper's theory of forward motion (there's some info on his website) or check out paul f. berliner's book "thinking in jazz".
hey loveforjazz

thanks styles! this is the stuff that i need!!!
yep, i looked at those before... the descending pentatonic scales and such? the descending pentatonic scale with a chromatic thing in the beginning is the only one i like... i just dont like the sound of the other ones.

i made my own variation.. so far only works with a. its like the c pentatonic descending, except with a sharp c, and over an a chord. thats like... a blues scale descending, ommitting the third in the scale. its kinda hard because u gotta go up for the c sharps, but i think its nifty.
woops. i realized thats not a blues at all.  if anything thats kinda mixolydian. still sounds good over dominants. :) i was in a hurry and never tried to categorize it until just then..
there is a book out about some of the tatum runs. he used lots of patterns and pentatonic shapes like peterson does.
the right hand according to tatum: books: riccardo scivales
