does anyone have any suggestions for a digital mini recorder? my mp3 player has a record function but i can't adjust the level and it just distorts.

minidisc players/recorders are considered the best personal recording devices and some of them come pretty inexpensive these days.  make sure you get one that can record microphone input, read the specs carefully, some of them won't record mic in.

thanks for the advice.  i set my budget at about $200(us) maximum.  i've been doing a little research and have settled on getting a zoom h2. ($199 of course)  if i had set the budget at $300 i'm sure i would be spending $299.  oh well, now i just need to find one locally.
i have an iriver mp3 player that has line-in that can record directly to mp3. if you have a digital piano - i have a yamaha - it will record directly from the line outs - or from the line outs of an amp or pa.
a one gig player (i have a t30) will record hours of music before running out of space. while not studio quality it is certainly good enough quality to record students, or download stuff to youtube. on ebay, you can get them for well under $100. check that it is a model that has line-in - some other brands also have direct line-in recording to mp3.

arrrrrrrgggggg!  i just found out that the h2 won't begin shipping for another month.
the zoom h2 just started shipping a few days ago.  i ordered one for $199 on thursday and received it today.  it sounds great and is very convenient in size.  although it can record at up to 48bit/96khz, i recorded some things and it has plenty of fidelity for my purposes at 320kbps mp3.  it's very cool.  today feels like christmas!
