Red Garland Locked Position

for some reason i had this confussed with the red gardland technique

doug explains it well and i understand it in theory but i have a hard time making it swing (sounds too "chopy" and stacato) and when i use it it tends to sound very "asian" sounding if that makes sense.

is the pedal used for this syle of playing?
