michel legrand was 47 years old in live tv performance from 1979. the song, "i will wait for you", is copyright 1965.

0:29 solo piano intro (rubato) plays the theme.
0:54 drums/bass enter with half time jazz feel
1:14 bass/drums walk a fast walking bass swing around 180 bpm, legrand improvises fast eighths, drummer drags the time and doesn't swing very well, legrand seems to groove with the bass player here but understandably sounds out of whack with the dragging drummer...legrand's fast swing eighths and triplets sound a little sloppy compared to an oscar peterson.
1:54 bass/drums change back to a 1/2 time feel, hinting at a 3/4
2:19 bass/drums walk again, drummer grooves better this time, that's a relief for legrand.
2:42 rhythm section switches to a bossa nova rhythm
3:04 switch to samba rhythm which is like a double time bossa nova legrand soars and can be proud of this! it's even eighths not swing and therefore easier for them.
3:29 switch to tango
3:55 ritards the tango down to ~ 1/2 time
extreme accelerando leading to an abrupt ending with a double forte arm slammed chord.

i'm on modem right now so i can't listen, but i will as soon as i'm in a you-tube friendly environment.  legrand's compositions are incredible and some of my favorites, but i didn't know he was also a player. i'm looking forward to checking it out.

truly one of my all time favorite composers.

i bought  "live at jimmy's" on vinyl back in the 70s - phil woods playing "you must believe in spring" w/legrand has always been a favorite of mine.
he has bigger shirt collars than oscar ever had.
i think he got those when he toured with elvis
i love the shirt. i must have one like that for my next solo gig at a holiday party where they request "no holiday music".
