anyone here dealing with "finally getting around to" whatever aspects of their overall approach they've been "avoiding up till now because........." and have any insights/perspectives re-this important stage in musical growth/development?

seems to me that a lot of the times you're avoiding something because it's an unknown phenomenon (image is incomplete), or your image is based on some misconception. (image is inaccurate) so when you try to think about it, your mind can't handle the issue very well.  so i think the first step in over coming an issue is to study it, and once you have a handle on how the problem works, you can break it down to simple steps, and build up from there.

i think the biggest problem is no taking the time to understand the problem.

yep, taking time to understand the problem is key.  of course, there's that "taking time" part that most of society today doesn't want to deal with  :)  if it's not ready in five minutes, it's not worth it, right?

looks like a live thread here.....whats' behind it is my getting organized finally,sorting through everything and coming up with some kind of approach,taking reading on,etc...........

i don't have time to do hardly anything, i have to make time.

so i sneak in a few moments here and there to do a little bit on the many projects i've got going and somehow that works for me.

there is no set schedule, i just do a little of this and a little of that and eventually things get done (and i'm not just talking about music here).

so even though i'm a relatively organized person, my approach to my life's chores and desires is completely disorganized.

for some a rigid regimen seems to work best (my bass player is that way) but not for me.
i suffer a similar problem.  as an accompanist for a solo, say at my local church, i choke.  i have a low threshold for stress, i guess.  i can play my very simple accompaniment over and over, and even memorize it, but when i get in front of the crowd (or congregation), i find my blood pressure shooting up, my face flushing, my hands shaking (not a useful symptom for a piano player), and even my vision shuddering off to no-man's land.  and yet, for 30 years i was a professor who lectured with equanimity to a theatre full of 300 students.  my sympathy goes out to you.
i often feel like i am just stumbling through the various steps.  i have a rough idea of what i don't know, but being in my thirties and not in a college jazz program, i am largely self-taught and don't always know what i "should" be working on next.

an example, i feel pressure to have x number of standards learned and memorized.  a year ago i was down on myself for not working on that stuff.  but in that case... it was actually kind of good that i delayed it, because i would have been memorizing it by going "ok, f minor 7... now bb minor 7..." - jazz was new enough for me that i wasn't seeing things in terms of chord relations, ii-v-i's, or familiar patterns.  so, what seemed at the time like a big waste of time - just reading through hundreds of fakebook charts and playing them all badly - was actually quite valuable.  i still haven't memorized many standards yet, but they all seem "smaller" and easier to grasp in my head now.

so in short... i think sometimes your resistances are good to pay attention to.  learning this stuff is supposed to be fun and you don't want to be *too* disciplinarian and hard on yourself about it.

then again, i really should be getting more comfortable with my ii-v-i's in all keys.  :)
i'm glad to see this thread kept alive and if more ljp people want to deal with whatever re-the topic it'll probably continue to be a good one..a lot of what goes on intellectually re-each of our own individual internal processes with the art form is more active as a factor behind things than is commonly recognized-in terms of progress and development overall.........
