way to go.

first of all, doug is the epitome of the true jazz pianist.

secondly his dvd is chock full of video that illustrates not only the chords and fingerings, but also includes comments on what he was thinking at individual moments during the tune.

his method for teaching jazz piano is absolutely state of the art!

you don't believe me? then watch this treatment of "you must believe in spring" on youtube

here the screen is split into four panels:

top panel: mr mckenzie's hands

2nd panel: a virtual keyboard with the lh in red and the rh in green

3rd panel: sheet music notation that highlights the current song position

bottom panel: doug's comments on what he's doing with the song as it flies by

never before in the history of music has anyone created such a comprehensive and intuitive way to teach jazz piano.

not only are the videos an incredible learning tool, but they generally come with complementary midi files (that can be slowed down a la vanbasco) and pdf print-out of the sheet music.

that mr mckenzie has not been picked up by a major publishing company to market his innovative teaching system absolutely boggles the mind.

there are hundreds of full blown arrangements on this dvd, and just watching them (much less learning from them) will take you weeks if not months.

the songs that mr mckenzie improvises over are full of every trick in the book (and then some!), and they are all extremely entertaining in their own right, as mr mckenzie's style is just simply a joy to listen to. the man has got the magic touch - soul, groove, you name it!

so, do you really want to learn jazz piano? then buy doug mckenzie's dvd. it's all right there waiting for you!

wow - great news - doug's videos are an excellent resource.
doug is obviously an accomplished pianist and i agree that some might learn from this method but personally i could not take much from this approach. great idea though.....
wow, another jazz piano istructional product out! there are just too many choices....it sounds like a fantastic program but i always prerfered book/cd instructional programs. anyways i'll probably get because doug has done so much for the jazz community.
i have always enjoyed watching doug's youtube lessons.
nice to see he has a dvd out too.
, without even taking into consideration the pdf sheet music transcriptions and lead sheets, the corresponding midi files and doug's explanations of his thought process.

buying doug's dvd will quite honestly be the most educational (and entertaining) $25 you'll ever spend!!!

ps: if you have any doubts that doug mckenzie is a world reknowned and highly respected player and teacher, please note that some of his youtube videos have over one hundred and fifty thousand hits (150,000) !!
at one of two sites -
https://www.bushgrafts.com/jazz
for all the videos, and for the 300 or so midis at https://home.wanadoo.nl/dougmckenzie/

i did the dvd initially to give to students that i had - i had quite a few other people ask if i had something like a cd or dvd as many don't have the fast connection needed to download the large higher quality video files that i have on my site, or are limited in the amount that can be downloaded. some just wanted the convenience of having everything on a single disk that could be accessed easily and instantly via the same menus as are on the website(s).

since i retired from full time teaching, i have been having lots of fun doing these videos - and it is a real buzz to find that quite a few people have found them useful - as jeff said on youtube i have had lots of 'hits'.

the cost i have placed on the dvd is in part just to cover the costs of postage, the considerable cost of producing small runs of dvds. i didn't want to just give these dvds away, as this is always unfair on those who are relying on sales of instructional material for a living. and while i love doing the videos, i don't mind charging for the time and costs of the clerical work involved in producing, testing, posting these dvds.

i would urge any others of you who would like to try doing the same thing to give it a try. there are a few others (on youtube) who use the medium to teach piano at a basic level - most 'pop' or classical. there is a need for someone to cover the 'basics' such as we on this site discuss all the time (chord voicings, basic jazz theory, etc). you don't need lots of expensive software - one of the screen capture programs available free on the net, windows movie maker - included free in all versions of windows, and perhaps a cheap midi program like band in a box.
love the dvd doug.  ten days to cross the world from australia to california.  very cool.  thanks again.

simply put, this cd is one of the most versatile teaching tools i have ever encountered - fit for probably all learning styles.  i can't find sufficient superlatives to say how much i admire this work and am very grateful to have my copy which was received in the uk within about 3/4 days of the order being placed. thanks doug.
