bob florence died recently.
a beautiful human being, and an exquisite musician.
i auditioned for him one year at centrum.  he was a warm and gracious man.
i have some very fond memories of him playing solo at the wine bar during jazz in the clubs, and also leading the all-star big band at the festival.  i will always remember his exquisite into to "invitation"...  and "moon river" with ingrid jensen...

a sad day in music, i feel lucky to have had the chance to have hung out with him during the times i went to the jazz camp in port townsend, he will probably always be one of my greatest influences in many aspects of how i approach music.

as cyn said, he was one of the nicest guys you could meet.  a genius with humor both in music and life and a guy with passion that showed in his music and everything else he did.

feel bad for his wife, those two were an inseparable team.

gotta mention one more thing.  for you composers out there, for tunes, bob said that he would play around with something at night then in the morning if it stuck, he would write it down.  for big band arranging, something he is widely regarded for, he would basically arrange the whole thing in his head and then just whip it out.  he was very happy about the whole computer notation invention thing (he used finale).
