i could use some help coping mccoys voicings on equinox.  it sounds like maybe he using bmajor 7 over e  major 7 for the c# minor7 chord... agree /disagree?  ideas for the voicings on the other chords?

you bet.

common tynerism from equinox, night has a thousand eyes, and my favorite things are those types of chords - for c#-7  lh: e g# b rh: d# f# a# c#
and sometimes moving the lh to d# f# a# or f# a# c#, keeping the rh constant is something tyner does a lot, especially on the live recordings.

i'm not at home and don't have my ipod with me but i transcribed equinox's voicings a while back and i remember this being what he does. if i can dig up my old transcription, i'll let you know what i got for other chords

another awesome thing to do, ala "my favorite things" is to play the minor11th chord and follow it up with the minor 11th chord a whole step above it. in c# minor that would be lh: e g# rh: b d# f# and then lh: f# a# rh: c# e# g#. this sounds especially cool because of the e# which technically doesn't belong.

i'll let you know if i find my transcription, but i definitely remember that during the comping i think he does have both of those things, and i agree that you have it exactly right.

that's one thing i think people overlook - when a lot of people think mccoy tyner, they think fourths all the way, and that's certainly true, but he also makes a lot of use of chords that are only stacked thirds. i think it's one of the most beautiful sounds we have available. when mccoy comps like that on my favorite things or night has a thousand eyes, i just see brilliant colors...

thanks hep that helps ... if you find that trancription that would be awesome too.
