hi folks,

finally decided to try giving some jazz lessons over skype.  i need two volunteers for some free 30 minute sessions so i can see how this works.  one requirement is that you bear with me while i make sure the skype thing works, and the other is to give me a glowing review if you got something out of it so i can use it in the marketing :)

what are the hardware and software requirements?
as long as you have a working webcam setup you can do it.  skype is free from https://www.skype.com.

scot,

i already take skype lessons with dave. i'm happy to help you out with it.
scot,
i took some skype lessons from andy laverne about 3 yrs. ago. we had some difficulties in terms of choppy audio and video, but i'd be game to give it a go again to see how well it works.
knotty and ep, sounds good.  i'm going on the road today for close to a week, but when i get back we'll schedule something.

great, just let me know when you're back.
i'd love to be part of the lab rat squad.  i have a 10mb cable connection and some decent computing power (along with a roland rd-700sx and time on my hands to practice).

thanks!

devon
ok, knotty, ep, and devon- let's do this.  like i said, 1/2 hour free jazz/piano lessons on skype.

i'd like to set it all up for the same day and i'm thinking monday.  i've got some other skype students signed up for monday - i had a great response from my latest learnjazzpiano.com newsletter that went out - so i think i can just dedicate that day to skype lessons.  morning, noon, or night, throw some times out (pst time zone, i live on the west coast) and we'll get this ball rolling!

scot,
unfortunately, i'm going to have to pass. i'm having technical difficulties - skype just isn't working for me. the video just breaks up and freezes all the time.
i need to look into it, but i'm guessing that my internet connection is just too flaky.
ep
scot,

if that works, i can meet 9 or 9.30 pm est on monday.

ep,
i had this problem earlier on a windows machine. it had to do with the latest version of skype, and --possibly-- the kind of webcam (logitech). i installed an older version (hard to find google old skype version). and everything was back to normal.

talk about losing your market quick, skype better watch out ... anyway, hope this helps.
knotty,
thanks for the tip. i'll give it a try.

ep
knotty, i guess that would be around 6 pst?  my skype name is "scot.ranney", so i'll have skype turned on before that time and you can "call" me.  looking forward to it-

hey scot,

thanks for the lesson yesterday. that was a lot of fun. your set up is really incredible. i can't believe how clear the sound and image were. i'm glad you were able to comment on my hand position. i was debating with someone a few weeks back whether beginners could take skype lessons. he said it was just the same as in person. i think you just proved that.

seeing how much you seemed to be having yourself, i think you're going to enjoy these lessons big time. that's the way to go now!

anyone wondering if skype lessons work, wonder no more! give it a shot.

certainly was a pleasure to meet you.

a little gift for you ;)
it was nice to "meet" you.  hope some of that stuff can make it into your playing.  i have to remember about looking at the camera when i'm talking, but then i'm looking at the camera and not what i think is "you" heh.

don't forget those arpeggios; they'll turn your left hand into a monster!
