an absolutely superb book - would like to hear from others who have also got it, and share ideas.
on another issue - can anyone recommend a good book for left hand development (making my playing sound more modern). playing bebop for a few years has meant that its basically shells in the left hand so was wondering if anyone knew of any texts that could help this.
ive spent some time using the barry harris diminished 'borrowing notes' in my voices - but they just tend to sound wrong :\

hi shaun / jazz +,

i hope you dont mind me jumping in to discuss this topic. i am working through this book right now also. what i am doing right now is i am going through all of the examples in relation to outline no. 1 and studying them and literally highlighting (with a yellow marker) the notes of the outline which in some instances are buried somewhat by devices and approach notes etc. it's easier for me then when going back through the outlines to get a grip on the various devices he uses around the skeletal outline (if that makes sense). i must admit i got stuck on 1 or 2 examples but i love the approach of this book. it would be perfect if he had some audio material to go with it so we can hear exactly what he is doing. i have only got as far as example 45 (tom harrell). i like this book though. i wish you the best of luck with it...
after doug mckenzie touted it, i went out and bought a copy.

so far i'm thumbed through it and played through the first 10 or 20 pages. i have found anything new, but it's certainly affirmed a couple vague notions that i've had more concretely.
