us jazz musician hits wrong note in spain

wed dec 9, 3:12 pm et

madrid (afp) – us jazz saxophonist and composer lary ochs says he has "seen it all" after a spectator disrupted a concert in spain by accusing him of not playing jazz -- and was backed by a policeman on duty.

the 60-year-old was performing with his band "larry ochs & drimming core" in the central town of siguenza on monday when the spectator got up and said they were performing "contemporary music" and not jazz, daily newspaper el pais reported.

a policeman at the scene joined in the ensuing debate and concluded och's performance "was not jazz," it added.

"i thought i had seen it all. obviously he is mistaken. at least i will have something to tell my grandchildren," ochs told the newspaper.

ochs is a specialist in "free jazz", an approach to the music genre that seeks to alter its conventions.

i get sometimes into arguments with my fellow spanish musicians here in spain ,they say you need to play c7b9 and not dbdim because thats what the book says, sort of a thing
i always tell people who complain about semantics, "thank you so much for your opinion, it means a lot and i'll think about what you said."  that usually shuts them up :)

this is proof (especially if the police back you up) that jazz is not and cannot be contemporary music.

and that there is no such genre as contemporary jazz.
