yeah, the only time i tuned an entire piano it took me 4 hours and the piano sounded like shit when i finished!  oddly enough though, in my metro area there are 3 or 4 really good pianists who also tune.  a couple of them also do voicing and regulation. but they are a bit eccentric:)  legend has it that one of them showed up at a fancy hotel to play on a baldwin grand.  the piano was horribly out of tune, so he tuned it, played the gig, then promptly detuned after the gig - ha!  he was sick of playing with shitty bass players so he became a bass player himself - and a very good one!

i remember a friend of mine who also has "perfect pitch" decided since his ears were so good, he could just tune a piano.  we were playing shows at six flags back then and they had kawai grands, so he takes a tuning hammer to the grand on his break and totally fucks up the tuning!  they had to make an emergency call to the staff tuner - haha!
