do you know of anywhere to find some good gospel grooves? i am also looking for some examples of rythmical gospel comping (not those ballad arpeggios stuff....)?

thanks.

here's some nice jazz gospel with monty alexander and billy taylor:

do you have any musical examples of what you're looking for, videos, recordings?
If I'm not back in 24 hours, call the president.

Scot is available for skype jazz piano lessons (and google hangouts, phone call, etc...)

wow. cool stuff. but i am not sure if this is exactly what i am after. i was thinking more like the intro to jamie cullums "these are the days", or something like that. or some of the stuff on memphis stomp" by dave grusin.
you might be thinking of 'praise' music which has a more contemporary
style than traditional 'gospel'.
it's all over the youtube as well.  'these are the days' would be
a good start in that direction.  another would be 'above all' by lenny leblanc and paul baloche.
monty always seems to be having a good time. ole don't shove anything into a niche, all music is inter-related. liking jamie cullums work means integrating it into your desired format. learn and adapt, don't let nomenclature dictate form or function, at least that's how i try to look at things.
funny this converation perked my curiousity so i went to amazon mp3 and listed to a little jamie cullum.  he sure sounds a lot more like a pop singer to me than having anything at all to do with gospel.  enlighten me... i did not hear any gospel up in his stuff at all.  sounded like a total pop act to me.
his last album sound very popish his earlier work might have been more in the jazz enviroment i would say,
to me it is modern english billy joel copy ,maybe the guy would do more intelectuall jazz albums but he opts for better economics pop zone instead (sort of ray charles's fate)which coincidentally was an excellent gospel pianist
a lot of the artists mentioned above probably have  roots in gospel. i would suggest checking out the real deal.  as jmkarns said, it is all over youtube.  there are as many styles of gospel music as there are styles of jazz (and a lot of similarities too)
i think cullum's work on that album (which i have) was more of an attempt at commercial success. that does not mean to infer that he sold out, just chose to work a little differently and make some money. i would probably sell my soul for a lot less, no wait i already did that for a lot less. listen to jmkarns and the dr,, whenever two people state the same thing in a post, i believe that makes it gospel (not the music, more like the book).
i would say that sounds more like gospel-blues style filtered through ray charles than trad gospel.  if you try to find gospel methods on how to play like that (i went through a phase myself) you'll mostly find arrangements of hymns and spirituals, which are nice and all but aren't the sort of thing that he's playing.  the gospel sound in this case comes from the blues licks and those great chromatic progressions.  really, it sounds more like ben folds in the piano than it does gospel, particularly ben's version of ray's "them that got."

also: lloyd glenn.  he was a big influence on ray charles, and some of those licks came down from him, but again, this is lead playing and not so much the comping approach that you're looking for.  also, maybe a funky, church guy like les mccann.
also jamie is like billy joel in that he has the ability to write and play in a lot of different pop styles.
aghhh no edit here...

*maybe a funky, church-y guy like les mccann.
are there any other suggestion from you guys? :)
i have many more but i'm keeping them to myself
well, i released a contemporary gospel cd project 2008. got some good stuff. check it out and let me know what you think. track 7 is all soft jazz..... you can listen to samples at the website below....

i always liked playing around with the piano part in "oh happy day"
by the edwin hawkins singers.  anybody know of an extended improv.
of this work?
ole, i think maybe you are looking for something that i am not quite understanding. there have been many good suggestions, which i would think would result in your spending more time checking them out rather than dismissing them. if you are looking for some form of affirmation, post exactly that specifically and see what happens. i am not trying to come of mean-spirited, i am just at a loss.
i have done many extended improvs on "oh happy day".  fun tune to hit on sunday morning with your bathrobe on.  sometimes i like to come to the piano with my bathrobe on on a sunday morning, coffee in hand, put the coffee down throw my hands in the air, shout "praise the lord" and then do at least a half hour improv on those changes before starting my day.  sometimes i even sing till i am afraid the neighbors will send the local pd over.   easy changes to find your groove on.  try it you'll like it.
mike, do you have a webcam? i think it would be great for you to post your "oh happy day" routine. i really think i need a visual to be able to appreciate your performance. i do get the basics but i believe it is necessary to actually see you doing it to complete the experience.
hee hee.  "let us make a joyful noise."
i have a webcam built into my macbook pro ... but i have not yet learned the basics of making a video.
the ben folds example is something close to what i was thinking about. thanks. if you have som more good examples, please share them. :)
ben folds strikes me as an elton john tribute.
