hi folks,

if you were here between saturday night and now you would have noticed that you could not post a message.  i kinda broke things accidentally!

1.messages are fixed again and in much better shape than they used to be.

2. some messages won't have thier synopsis ready until a person or search engine "clicks" on it. that's when the old message is imported into the new message system.

3. there is still some undesirable behavior, like, when you log in at the bottom of a messages screen, when you click on the "back" link and it takes you into nowhere land, and i'm sure a few others will crop up.

all in all, though, i think things are working.  but sure to let me know if i've missed something.

thanks!

one of the neat things that happened during the update is that old messages that were not showing up because they scrolled off the message base are now all showing up again (they were all archived and now i'm using that info)

last note- i have noticed an issue with "rooms" that were recently turned into threaded forums.  the problem is that the messages from those rooms were in different archive systems which means the messages wont' be available until i make an importer.  maybe in the morning, it shouldn't be that difficult.

growing pains, that's for sure.

i know i, and probably everyone else here, really appreciates the hard work you do to provide this forum for us!  not to mention, the excellent advice and insight you share.
okay...i now see what's happening when i type in a message box such as this one.  there is a menu bar (white text/ black background) on the right of my screen labeled "all forums"  part of this text box goes behind that bar, so i cannot see what i'm typing, while "maximize.  however when i make the window smaller, the text box drops below the menu bar and i can see everything.  granted, i'm using an old crt 17" 1024/768 :)
ah, and it was not doing this before the "wonkyness?"  i'll check this out, probably some broken css. thanks for the note!

i know there are a few glitches in the new message system- the back/next buttons, the good dr.'s note above, but i've been working on incorporating all the old messages in the system into the, uh, system.

this means that so far i've been able to locate databases and archives of messages from the beginning of 2004 and have some scripts that will let me suck all this info in.  it's very confusing because the messages of ljp have been stored over the years in oh, half a dozen different ways... but when i get this done, it will be truly cool to have basically every single message that has ever been posted on ljp available not only to read, but to add posts to.

i still have to wrap my head around it all, though, hard to keep track of everything, kind of like building a four dimension card house in your head behind your back.

well this is cool: from the beginning of the ljp forums, out of tens of thousands of messages, i'm only missing about 1100.  i spent the latter part of today writing scripts to suck in all the old messages from all the old formats into one main old message database which means that when you click on an old message it will come up.

well, it will come up when i've added that bit to the system which is not going to happen tonight.  in the next couple of days.

call it.. growing pains!

next big item on the docket is one of those nifty login with facebook things.  it looks a bit complicated but we jazz piano players are nothing if not persistent!

i just decided to check out "whacky's world" and the few threads i clicked on gave me this: "notice: this message has been censored due to innappropriate content. "  is that part of the overhaul, or were we all bad boys?.  feel free to yank the room if you like.  i haven't use it in years:)
i have those messages in my big message database. basically here's what's going to happen. when i put this system in place, all those old messages that have that censored message will actually appear normally.  right now the system can't find the messages because they are not being stored in the "new" way, some of the online archives are missing (i have them all here locally) and for other reasons.  this should all be working smoothly soon, maybe even today.

out of all the messages we've ever had here i'm only missing around 1000 which is great!
