"for those of you that don't know, the idea of the monthly standard room is that we take a tune every month and look at it in detail with the aim of making a solo piano arrangement of it. ideally, all the people involved would post a midi file of their own version(s) of the tune. other people will then be able to listen to the versions and maybe get some ideas from them and/or help people out with suggestions as to how they can improve.
the beauty of this is that everyone can get involved regardless of ability. beginners can get some great advice from more experienced players like scot and 7 for example and they, in turn, can also post their versions of the tune for other people to learn from.
so for july 2004 i'm going to suggest 'how high the moon' as the monthly standard - this is a good tune to practice those all important ii-v chops on and is straightforward enough for most people to be able to make an attempt at it. although i know the tune i've never actually played it before so it will be a voyage of discovery for me too.
if anyone needs a chart for this, please let me know. if you don't want to put your email address in plain view then feel free to pm me. i'll be posting an analysis of the tune in the next few days."

Volume 1 of this educational jazz piano book contains 15 jazz piano exercises, tricks, and other interesting jazz piano techniques, voicings, grooves, and ideas Scot Ranney enjoys playing.

Volume 2 has 14 jazz piano exercises and tricks of the trade, and quite a bit of it is Calypso jazz piano related material, including some Monty Alexander and Michel Camilo style grooves. Jazz piano education is through the ears, but books like this can help.
Volume 3 contains 12 jazz piano exercises and explorations by the acclaimed jazz piano educator, pianist, author, and recording artist Tim Richards.
Tim wrote the well known "Exploring Jazz Piano" and "Improvising Blues Piano" books and has several others to his name.
Volume 4 is by Jeff Brent, a jazz pianist, composer, teacher, and author of "Modalogy" and other acclaimed jazz theory and education books. In this book Jeff shares detailed analysis of transcriptions of live performances. He covers everything from the shape of the songs to the tricks and licks he uses in improvised lines to the ideas behind his lush chord voicings.
