hey staggs, thanks for the compliments :). as far as oliver nelson, would you believe i've never really checked him out?! the technique you mentioned though is a classic trick all jazz pianists should know though. the trick i use for dom7b9 is to think of a fully diminished 7th chord a half step higher than the dom7 chord (sort of like an upper structure.) so like a dbdim7/c.

i also tend to use dimmaj7 as you mentioned...like a dbdim triad plus a major seventh at the top (dbdimmaj7/c). a cool trick with this is to move the right hand up and down in minor 3rds parallel maintaing the m3-m3-p4 structure while continuing to pedal on c in the left hand. now that i think of it, i actually wrote an article on just this topic...look for "spicing up diminished chords" in my list of files.

anyway, those are my thoughts, maybe some other people can give you more of an insight into oliver's stuff...
