tonight is the night of my christmas jazz concert.  first large scale concert i've put on since i've been living in bellingham.  i was going to have two wind players and a trumpet, but my trumpet guy is stuck in korea right now, so it will be a  two sax thing.  still cool.

if it looks like i haven't been around for several days, it's because of the massive amounts of preparation i've been doing to get this show together.

i think it will go well, but we haven't rehearsed and some of the music is highly arranged, so hopefully the musicality of the great players i'm putting on stage will come through and make everything sound great :)

here's a link to the show:

good luck scot!

what different styles are you covering.  can you give us a hint of the flavor of some of your arrangements (like which pieces are done in which styles, do you switch styles during pieces, and do you have anything funny or  unusual planned).

once again, great website.
sure, here's the set list:

set 1:

what child is this, solo piano (my style mixed with chic and herbie and jarrett)
christmas time is here (piano/tenor sax)
mary's little boy child (full group, calypso jazz)
winter wonderland - full group, med-up swing, arranged
santa baby- vocal ala madonna style
merry christmas baby - vocal jazz blues
white christmas - fast latin in eb with bm7 vamp at top and end

set 2:
santa is coming to town - trio, oscar peterson style, up tempo
oh christmas tree - trio, big swing style
god rest ye merry gentlemen - fast light funky reggae feel (swing some solos)
i'll be home for christmas - ballad, piano/vocal
we three kings - fast swing, progressive feel
sleigh ride - med up, vocals, solos, out on half time blues feel, at the end, play the main melody fast as a chaser and i talk them out.

if there is an encore, we'll do a medium swing version of have yourself a very merry christmas with  vocals ala ella

as for funny and/or unusual things, i never have to plan those- they just seem to happen on their own, you know?

:)

well, the show went great.  it was sold out (at $15 a pop), they turned people away, and the band still didn't make any money :)  enough to pay the guarantees, but... that's the problem with dealing with an organization like a theater. there's so much overhead, nothing is left over for the musicians. but apart from that, it was a really nice.  even had people giving me an applause when i walked out on stage for the second set- before i even played anything.

i recorded it. if any of the tracks are good, i'll put them up somewhere for you to hear.
