yup, i'm 15, started playing jazz at 12, for the worst reason possible :p. it was the only band with the piano in it. back then, all i did was read off the sheet music, and practice the score a lot (now i know this is the wrong way of doing it). when i got into my jazz band at high school in grade 9, i didnt learn about comping until late in the year, partially because none of my friends wanted to teach it to me. but now i've moved to a different school, and i've learned so much more, how to comp, how to comp modal, how to listen to the rhythm section and soloist, and all that jazz. i think i'm going to go to my jazz piano teacher for a lesson soon and ask him which, and how many non-scalar tones i can play in my improvisations :p. and scot, here in my school, it is hard to jam, as there are hardly any jazz enthusiasts in our jazz band. most have taken jazz band up as a passing interest, and frankly, most arent very good at playing their instrument. man....if i was back in my old school....i'd have gotten to play in gigs with all my jazz friends :(
