anyone with reasonable piano skills, sequencer software and a decent computer soundcard or module can perhaps fake up a useable bassline and some other jazz sounds (vibes, for example). but in my experience, putting together any kind of serviceable drum track is a very difficult art. so i thought i'd invest in jamstix (https://www.rayzoon.com/), a clever piece of programming by ralph zeuner that simulates a human drummer by only playing what is possible for someone with four limbs, and which reacts in real time to midi or audio input. i've had it for a few days and am on a steep learning curve, but my first impressions are pretty favourable. it's capable of quite subtle interactions, and often comes up with creative-sounding surprises. it's very controllable, allowing the user to tweak every imaginable parameter, and it integrates nicely with other software (i'm running it as a vsti with sonar and using it to trigger drum sounds in m-audio's drum and bass rig). although i haven't really put it to the test yet, my feeling is that it won't be very satisfactory for anyone wanting to do a lot of straight-ahead swing stuff. but for funk, latin and even-time use i think it's going to be very handy, and seems to me to be taking us a step nearer to the truly reactive band in a box. there's a downloadable demo on the rayzoon website if you're interested.

Volume 3 contains 12 jazz piano exercises and explorations by the acclaimed jazz piano educator, pianist, author, and recording artist Tim Richards.

Tim wrote the well known "Exploring Jazz Piano" and "Improvising Blues Piano" books and has several others to his name.
